Alternative Power Systems

We’ve been utilizing solar panels and wind turbines for a relatively long time now and have begun making massive pushes towards helping our societies let go of their dependence on fossil fuels and instead move to renewable power supplies, such as sun, wind and sea. Solar panels and wind turbines are among the most effective and are also suitable in smaller forms for personal, home-use. Able to power our homes, we’ve started making the move towards providing our own alternative power systems.

Solar Power

Growing cheaper every day, the solar panel has become a primary source of power for homeowners looking to utilize renewable energy. It can reduce costs a lot more than many other alternatives, as it requires limited maintenance due to its lack of moving parts. Housed safely, it can generate usable electricity for several decades before needing replacement. During this time, it could easily make back the costs. The size of the panel determines its productivity, though it can’t really compete with an effective wind turbine.

Due to cost rising in proportion to size, solar panels can grow very expensive toward the upper end of the scale. However, they’re efficient even on cloudy days and operate silently, making them the preferred option for homeowners. It can be hooked up to your home and used to power the lights or certain appliances, maybe more with larger panels.

Wind Power

Most costly and larger than solar panels, wind turbines are, in turn, a whole lot more productive. However, with the moving parts and size, it can become costly in maintenance or calling out qualified engineers to do said task. Furthermore, there may be some noise as it picks up speed. The costs can be reduced, however, by selling the electricity back to an appropriate company.

There are two wind turbine designs. The mast-mounted is a free-standing, 6kW-producing machine that is erected in an exposed position and is very effective. The roof-mounted is less so and only produces up to 2kW. While more than solar panels, the disadvantages may be too overwhelming for some homeowners and they find the sight of one unsightly. I have personally managed to build my own home DIY renewable energy system by following an online system which you can find out more about at my website link below.
